#WhoMadeMyClothes: a behind-the-scenes glimpse into CALIDA production
Fashion Revolution Week happens every year in the week coinciding with 24 April. It is one of the largest fashion activism movements worldwide and has been campaigning for a more ethical, more sustainable and more transparent fashion industry for around 10 years. It is with great appreciation and pride that we thank our seamstresses and sewers in our production in Hungary. They make us what we are and give their best every day. CALIDA has always seen it as a responsibility to be committed to honestly appreciating people, animals and nature along the entire value chain, and consequently relies on the highest quality, labour and environmental standards. To guarantee this and to make it tangible for our customers, we have been working with the labels OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN and OEKO-TEX® STeP since 2016.
Our own production facility, which manages the production of all CALIDA-manufactured products, is located on the border between Hungary and Austria. We have been continuously expanding the production facility for 30 years now, which has contributed to positive economic development in the region. Around half of all employees at our production facility have been working for CALIDA for more than 10 years – an incredible commitment that we really appreciate. Every piece of clothing that you buy from us represents a decision in favour of long-lasting quality, fair and transparent production, and an honest appreciation of people, animals and nature.
Fashion Revolution is a movement that started exactly 10 years ago, following the horrific factory collapse in 2013 at the Rana Plaza factory complex in Bangladesh, in which 1,135 people lost their lives and over 2,500 people were injured. The catastrophe was caused by a lack of infrastructure and gross negligence.
Since then, those taking part in Fashion Revolution Week have taken a stand against labour law violations like this. The vision is to create a fashion industry that conserves, protects and restores the environment. In doing so, people should be placed above growth and profit.
Each year, the movement’s activity culminates on the anniversary of the Rana Plaza tragedy – 24 April. In support, the hashtags #WhoMadeMyClothes and #IMadeYourClothes were created to bring transparency to the fashion industry. Fashion companies around the world share insights from their production facilities and post pictures of their textile workers. This gives the fashion manufacturers a face and a voice and attention can be drawn to any humanitarian issues.
