Which colours help you fall asleep? Wall colours and their effect

Usually, the colour scheme of a room depends solely on personal preferences. Nevertheless, it makes sense to consider the spatial conditions as well. Size, amount of light, orientation and use are all extremely important factors in choosing a wall colour. We therefore explain not only what effect the individual colours have, but also in what circumstances they are suitable for your bedroom.

Green and blue tones help you fall asleep

You may have thought that blue and green wall colours are rather inappropriate for the bedroom – after all, these are cool tones. However, there are studies that describe precisely these shades as particularly soothing and sleep-promoting. While blue is reminiscent of the stillness under water, shades of green bring to mind a peaceful forest walk.

Which shades of green or blue are right for your bedroom depends entirely on the amount of light. A dark fir green or a deep midnight blue can be very cosy and sleep-promoting. However, they can make an already small and dark room appear even more compact.

If turning your bedroom into a cave isn’t the vibe you’re going for, you should paint the walls in light colours. Sage green or dove blue are popular colour variations that make the room appear cheery but calming. You can then add dark shades through your home accessories.

Pink and purple provide balance

Pink and purple tones certainly do not appeal to everyone. Nevertheless, these feminine shades radiate an enormous sense of calm and thus ensure a restful night’s sleep. But again, the smaller the room, the lighter the wall colour should be. In addition to dark purple and berry shades, you could choose a soft lilac or dusky pink for your walls. Taupe also belongs to this colour spectrum and is great for a more masculine interior design.

Natural tones: beige, brown and ochre for more warmth

Natural shades such as sand, brown or beige, but also ochre, are popular colours for the bedroom, as they bring a sense of calm and warmth to the space. You can mix many natural shades, since these colours rarely clash. You can also combine natural colours with a wide variety of rich shades.

Wooden furniture is also very suitable for furnishing the bedroom, as it radiates warmth. Just make sure you don’t overdo it with natural colours and dark wood so that the room doesn’t appear too rustic, but instead keeps a modern look. For example, timeless decor in black and white goes very well with light beige tones.

Light colours bring orderliness and clarity

Do your thoughts often go round in circles at night and keep you from falling asleep? If so, orderliness is the be-all and end-all when it comes to unwinding. Light wall colours can help – even white is not a bad choice in the bedroom, as long as it doesn’t make the room appear cold and uncomfortable.

If you also use your bedroom as a study, the bright surroundings provide structure and enhance your concentration. You can even use green plants or your favourite decor items in bright colours such as red or pink as eye-catchers. They will turn your plain and light room into something special without stopping you from falling asleep.

Not a morning person? Bright colours will get you going!

Do you have no problems falling asleep, but just can’t seem to get out of bed in the morning? In this case, you have certainly done a lot right when it comes to the colour and interior design of your bedroom. Nevertheless, a more cheerful colour scheme is a good idea so that you can start the day full of energy.

Warm yellow shades won’t stop you from falling asleep, but they will boost your mood in the morning. If a yellow wall is too dominant for you, you can instead opt for a cheerful colourful picture next to your bed. Even a light lime or vanilla yellow does wonders for the soul without being overpowering.

Yellow light and candlelight bring warm, soothing colours into your room that are ideal for sleeping. To make it easier to get up in the morning, you can set up a daylight alarm clock with cooler light. This will ensure a cheerful start to your day.
