ONCE A CUFFS LOVER, ALWAYS A CUFFS LOVER

In today’s Switzerland, it is impossible to imagine bedtime without pyjamas. But when British travellers first brought it back from India and Persia, this sleepwear was considered to be exclusively for gentlemen. It wasn’t until the 1950s that women discovered pyjamas for themselves. In 1957, parallel to this development in the fashion world, CALIDA invented something that made the brand famous beyond the borders of Switzerland: it introduced cuffed pyjamas and, with them, its patented waistband.

They were the first of their kind – by developing the cuffed pyjamas, CALIDA achieved a true innovation. So it’s no wonder that CALIDA even took the trouble to patent its famous ‘Bündli’ (cuffs). No riding up, no chilly nights and soft materials that are comfy to wear – these are just some of the qualities that made these pyjamas so famous and an absolute must-have at the time.

Claims

And from the beginning, the pyjamas have fulfilled all the standards that CALIDA has stood for since 1941.

Functionality: no riding up, with a comfortably warming effect in unheated bedrooms – both then and now.

Durability: a timeless design and high-quality, naturally soft cotton – highly functional with a perfect finish.

Quality: a product that maintains its shape and stays wonderfully soft, even after multiple washes (including at high temperatures).

It’s not surprising that these pyjamas have also left their mark on many of the decades that followed. Over the years, the women’s, men’s and children’s pyjamas have only ever varied slightly in collar design and their styles have barely changed. When it comes to colour, however, the product has always moved with the times. From monochrome styles, to colourful ‘flower power’ patterned prints, to stripes, the pyjamas have always catered to customers’ tastes. Materials have continued to evolve too. For example, in 1958, terry cloth pyjamas became a firm favourite for the whole family.

Collection

What used to be a hit is now a classic – a truly CALIDA iconic piece, without which the range would no longer be complete. And of course, it would be remiss of us not to include them in the birthday collection we’ve created for our 80th anniversary; they appear in a new design that’s fresher than ever.

And if we’re completely honest, if you’ve slept in cuffed pyjamas once, you’ll do it again and again – after all, ‘once a cuffs lover, always a cuffs lover’.
